James Armstrong was a captain of the 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Line, 1 September 1775; colonel of the 8th Regiment, North Carolina Line from 26 November 1776 to 1 June 1778 when he retired. He later was colonel of a North Carolina state regiment (company of Rangers) and was wounded at Stono Ferry, 20 June 1779. For 84 months service, he was granted 7,200 acres "within the limits of the lands allotted the officers and soldiers of the Continental Line, by Law, 1783, Oct. 14: Oct. 22."2,3
