     Lieut. Richard Norman was born say 1623 (deposed aged about fifty 19 March 1673/4;2 deposed aged about fifty-seven at June Term 1680).3,1 He was the son of Richard Norman.1 He married Margaret (—?—) by abut 1649.1 He drowned in 1683 at Misery Island, Massachusetts, situated between Marblehead and Manchester Harbors, and on 11 August 1683 a jury of inquest was impanelled to "inquier into the untiemlie death of Lieutenant Richard Norman" who found upon examining witnesses "that being in a shallop at Morttons miserie [Misery Island] he leapt out of the shallop and indeavoring to swime ashoar was drownded having befor striped himself intending to reast himself and swime ashoar."4,5
     
     Lieut. Richard Norman lived in Marblehead and 1653 his father deeded the homestead to him.6 He was engaged in the fishing trade and he also kept an inn, receiving a license each year from 1669 until 1679, and again in 1682. He served the town of Marblehead as selectman in 1670, 1671 and 1672, took the freeman's oath in 1680 and was the town constable that same year. His military career began in 1675 when he was ensign of the local foot company, and four years later he was confirmed as its lieutenant. He served in the Jury of Trials in 1668, 1673, 1676 and 1677.4
