     John Downing was born on 10 April 1684.1 He was the son of Capt. John Downing Esq. and Susanna Miller.1 He married first Elizabeth Harrison on 26 November 1706.2 He married second as her second husband Sarah Little Thing on 10 April 1742.2 Col. John Downing died on 14 February 1766 in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, at age 81.3 He was buried in Newington Cemetery, Newington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.4
     
     John Downing was a captain, colonel, Royal Councillor and distinguished citizen of Exeter and Newington.1

In 1715 John Downing and his father Capt. John Downing were both original members of the Newington Church.5,2

In 1720 "Capt. John Downing Esq. and his son John Downing" each had a fifty acre grant in Arundel, York County, Maine.2

John Downing was named in his father John Downing's will dated 23 February 1743/44 and with his brother Richard Downing, was executor.2
