John Ralston was a descendant of the immigrant John Roulstone who came to Boston from Scotland in the seventeenth century. The name was spelled many different ways in the early records: Rowlstone, Rowlston, Roulstone, Rolston, Raulston, Roulston, Rawlston and Ralston. The name began to appear in Augusta County, Virginia, records about 1742. John lived there with his family in the area that was set off as Botetourt County in 1770. For many years, the Raulstons lived in the community of Fincastle, the county seat, on the Catawba and Looney's Mill creeks, tributaries of the James River.1
