     Samuel Butterfield was born in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Samuel Butterfield and Mary (—?—).1 Samuel married Tabitha Butterfield of Westford on 7 May 1730 in Westford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1,2 He died in 1742.1
     
     Samuel was mentioned in his father Samuel Butterfield's will dated 26 April 1703.3 Samuel and Tabitha Butterfield had one adopted child, David, son of Samuel's brother Jonathan.1 His will is dated 23 January 1741/42; probated 5 April 1742.1
