     Joseph Butterfield was born in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Joseph Butterfield and Lydia Ballard.1 He and Sarah Colburn, both of Dracut, were married by Justice Minott 22 November 1709.2,3 He died in 1757.4
     
     Joseph Butterfield and Sarah Colburn had seven children.5
