     Benjamin Butterfield was born on 10 August 1735 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of John Butterfield and Anna Hildreth.1
     
     On 24 March 1763 John Butterfield divided his Chelmsford lands between Benjamin and his brother Ephraim, reserving a life interest. In 1766 hey sold a large part of this estate, later the most valuable part of the city of Lowell, to Thomas Fletcher.2
