Ephraim Butterfield was born on 28 July 1741 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of John Butterfield and Anna Hildreth.1 He was buried on 7 June 1777 in Forefather's Burying Ground, Chelmsford Center.2
On 24 March 1763 John Butterfield divided his Chelmsford lands between Ephraim and his brother Benjamin, reserving a life interest. In 1766 hey sold a large part of this estate, later the most valuable part of the city of Lowell, to Thomas Fletcher.3
