     Samuel Underwood was born on 14 February 1655/56 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of William Underwood and Sarah (—?—) (Underwood).1 He was baptized on 1 February 1656/57 in Chelmsford; aged "about 1 year."2,3 The name of his wife was Sarah (—?—).4 He and Sarah are said to have moved in their old age to Litchfield, New Hampshire, where he died 5 March 1734/35.4
     
     His only office at Chelmsford was that of fence-viewer in the Stony Brook valley section of town.5 By his father William's will dated 14 March 1693/94, Samuel was left the lands and meadows at Great and Little Tadmuck which he had formerly given him, to be his full portion of the estate, but added his best greatcoat, a great chest and the corn owed him by Joshua Fletcher.6 In the right of his father he received grants of town lands in 1711, 1717 and 1720.4
