James Bryan served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Delaware Line, having enrolled at age 15 (about 1779) near Milford, Sussex County, Delaware. He moved to Fort Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, in 1795. In 1825 he moved to Union township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He applied for a pension on 2 September 1834 in Fayette County at age 71. A Certificate of Pension was issued on 7 July 1837.2

James Bryan was mentioned in his father Bennett Bryan's will dated 28 October 1787 in Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. The one-third interest in the land left to his mother during her widowhood, was to go to James when her interest ceased.1
The Sussex County Orphan's Court appointed James Bryan guardian of his minor brother Jonathan on 9 November 1787.3
