Bill moved with his family in February 1922 to Sandy Point, a small community in north central Brazoria County, a few miles from where he was born.6 The Sandy Point school had only seven grades, so area children attended high school in Angleton. There was no school bus service, so Bill took room and board in Angleton during the school year. At about age 14 he had spinal meningitis and had to learn to walk again. He fully recovered and was an outstanding athlete at Angleton High School, and graduated there circa 1934. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, and met Jean, an Army dietician from New Richland, Minnisota, when they were both stationed in Louisiana. They lived all of their married life in New Richland, where they owned and operated "Horn Inn" and later, a bowling alley. Jean never remarried. She still lives in New Richland.6
