John Patten was the son of Matthew Patten and Margaret (—?—) (Patten).1 He married Hannah Means, widow of Nathaniel Harmon of Scarborough after October 1759.1 He drowned in the wreck of sloop Judith, in 1783 off Marshfield, Massachusetts.1
Brothers John and Robert Patten in partnership, purchased property in Pepperellborough in 1765 and 1772, and were deeded land and one-sixteenth of the saw-mill in the same town by their father. They also bought land in Bowdoinham and Pownalborough. He was a legatee of his uncle, William Patten of Boston in 1770. John was co-executor with brother Robert of their father's will. Also to the sons were given two-fifths of the land at Deerwander which belonged to their deceased brother James, his salt marsh at Leighton's Point, one-half of his interest in the saw-mill at the falls in Biddeford, two cows, a horse and all of his clothes.2 Capt. John Patten's slave Chloe married Capt. Benjamin Hooper's Cato on 26 November 1778. His brother Robert was appointed administrator of his estate in October 1783, the inventory amounting to £529. Land in Biddeford, encumbered by legacies to his sisters Lydia and Susanna from their father, was sold in 1786 to Joseph Hill to pay debts.3
