     John Burbank was born on 20 March 1752 in Arundel, York County, Maine.1 He was the son of Lieut. John Burbank and Hannah Hutchins.2 He married Anna Whitten English.3 He died on 13 October 1843 in Lyman, York County, at age 91. The records of the Probate Court of York County give the date of his death as 3 October 1844.3
     
     John Burbank enlisted in Capt. N.M. Littlefield's company in 1775. He was a sergeant in Captain Eliphalet Daniel's company at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1776. At Fort Sullivan, 15 Janary 1776, he gave his age as 23, place of abode Arundel. He enlisted on board a privateer and was captured in 1777 and was sent to England, a prisoner. He was released in 1779 and at once enlisted as "master-of-arms" under Paul Jones on the Bon Homme Richard. During the encounter with the Serapis, and while the ship was sinking, he released the prisoners and was censured by Jones.

Made application for a pension on 25 June 1818 at Lyman, York County, Massachusetts (Maine):
Enlisted November 1775, Capt. Eliphalet Daniel's Co. (then of Portsmouth, Me.) as Sgt. for one year and then supplied a substitute and received a discharge.
Engaged as a privateer about the latter part of November 1776 and was taken prisoner by the Treasonable and held in Mill Prison, England, for 2 years 4 months. Was then carried to France and enlisted on the Continental ship Goodman Richard, commanded by Paul Jones, and served about 2 years. Reached Philadelphia about 1781 and was discharged. They took the Serapis during this time.

In 1829 he reported that he had the under half of 140 acres in Lyman. Occupation, farming. Family - wife Anna, aged 77 years (application rejected on the score of property.)

7 August 1832. Applied under the new Act, and was enrolled.

A letter concerning the application of Burbank - relates that he was Sgt-at-arms of the Bon Homme Richard.

In 1819 Israel Whitten of Arundel, York Co., testified that he was in service and John Burbank was Sergeant at that time.

Daniel Emery of Limerick, York Co., was in service in Capt. Daniel's company with John Burbank at Ft. Sullivan.4
