Matilda Sophia V. Blakely was born in 1818 in Montréal, Quebec.1 She was the daughter of George Blakely. She and Isaac S. Davis, son of George Davis and Rosetta (—?—) (Davis), obtained a marriage license on 6 April 1841 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama.2 They married on 11 April 1841 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama.1,3,4,5 She died on 23 or 24 August 1862 in Galveston, Galveston County, Texas, CSA.6,7,1
Traditionally, Matilda was disowned by her father for marrying a Roman Catholic, and her obituary does state that she was a convert. However, her conversion evidently came before Isaac's because their marriage, that required dispensation for disparitus cultus, preceded his baptism. If there is any truth at all to the story, she may have been disowned for marrying a Jew, or for converting to the Catholic faith for whatever reason. Her baptism is not recorded in the Mobile Catholic records.
The family, probably consisting of Isaac, Matilda, Leo and Agnes, moved from Mobile to Texas about 1858. Probably in 1861, when Isaac and Leo left for the war, Matilda and Agnes moved to the Ursuline Convent in Galveston. She was perhaps ill at that time because she died the following year "after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude" and was buried in Galveston. Following the 1900 storm, the grade level of Galveston was raised and only those gravestones that families paid to have reset were preserved.
