Joseph Hanks was born on 20 December 1725 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia.1 He was the son of John Hanks and Catherine (—?—) (Hanks).1 He married Ann "Nanny" Lee, daughter of William Lee, in 1758 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia.2 He died before 14 May 1793 in Nelson County, Kentucky.3,2
Most Lincoln scholars name Joseph and Nanny (Lee) Hanks as the great-grandparents of Abraham Lincoln, after which there is substantial disagreement. Some believe that Joseph and Nanny had a son James born about 1761, but no daughter named Lucy, and that Nancy Hanks, Lincoln's mother, was James' legitimate daughter by Lucy Shipley. Others omit James from the list of children and add a daughter Lucy, also born about 1761, and argue that Nancy was her illegitimate daughter. Both James and Lucy are included here for those interested in examining the two theories. However, the writer has no proof that either was a child of Joseph and Nanny. Note that the page showing the children has different parents for Joseph as reflected in another theory.
