James Cobb was mentioned in his brother David Cobb's will dated 3 November 1790 in Wayne County, North Carolina.6,7
James's will, dated 5 April 1794, mentions Stephen Cobb, son of his brother David; "my children"; wife Penelope Cobb; son John Bridgers Cobb, under 20; unborn child; Thomas Horn, son of Damaris Horn; "my daughters"; William and Thomas, sons of his brother Nathan; brother Stephen Cobb; he appoints wife Penelope and friends Robert Gully and William Hackney executors.8,9

On 13 May 1814, there was a division of twelve slaves belonging to the estate of James Cobb decd. among his four heirs, namely John B. Cobb, John Coleman and wife, Wiley Coleman, and James Cobb. This division is recorded in Wayne Co. Ledger, 1812/1816, p. 117. The ledger erroneously gives the name Wiley Croom instead of Wiley Coleman, but the original record in the Wayne Co. Courthouse states the name correctly.1
