     Captain Stephen Cobb was born circa 1735 in Bertie County, North Carolina.4,5 He was the son of Robert Cobb and Mary Deberry.3 He married Patience.1 He died by October 1785 in Wayne County, North Carolina.6,5
     
     Stephen Cobb first appeared in the records of Northampton County, North Carolina, on 25 February 1757 when his uncle Benjamin Cobb deeded him land originally taken up by Joseph Cobb Sr.7,8 He moved to Dobbs County (extinct), North Carolina, ca.1762, where on 12 October 1762, he entered 700 acres of land under Lord Granville. In 1779, Wayne County was formed from Dobbs, and Stephen Cobb lived there until his death in 1785. He was a merchant and an enterprising man, and was quite wealthy when he died, being possessed of more than 3,800 acres in Pitt, Edgecombe and Wayne Counties, 2,120 acres and an iron foundry in Nash County, as well as 41 slaves and a personal estate assessed at over 1,688 pounds. During the Revolution, he was Captain of the Militia in Wayne County, and assisted in provisioning the troops; he was instrumental in apprehending deserters near Kingston, North Carolina. He carried on an interesting correspondence with Governor Caswell, and represented Wayne County in the General Assembly in 1780. North Carolina Colonial and State Records show various payments to Stephen Cobb for his Revolutionary War services. After the Revolution he was appointed one of the Commissioners to build a Courthouse in Wayne County, and was a member of the Council of State for North Carolina.9

On 11 July 1758, Stephen Cobb of Northampton County Planter to Thomas Clifton, Jr., of Southampton County, Virginia for 50 lbs. tract of land on south side of Correroy Swamp, 100 acres, also another tract of land on south side of Correroy Swamp bought by Carrolus Anderson, also another tract taken up by Joseph Cobb Sr. and conveyed by Benjamin Cobb to said Stephen, containing together 400 acres. "Have a good right of inheritance."11

Stephen Cobb was mentioned in his father Robert Cobb's will dated 14 October 1765 in Northampton County, North Carolina.12,13

On 22 November 1785 in Wayne County, North Carolina, the settlement for his estate was made among his children and his wife Patience.14
