Some family members report having heard rumors that Kate committed suicide by hanging herself from the drapes in her room at St. Mary's Infirmary where she had been hospitalized for ten days prior to her death. However, in his journal, Joe Underwood wrote, "My dear and oldest daughter – Kate Underwood died June 8, 1912 of Paralysis at St. Mary's Infirmary Galveston, Texas…" Her death certificate also refutes the rumor, giving her cause of death as cerebral hemorrhage. Kate, who never married, lived all her life with her parents in the Underwood home Click to view image on the west bank of the Brazos River where she was born.1
