     John E. Scheurer was born on 12 July 1896 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. The California Death Index gives his date of birth as 12 July 1895.1 He was the son of John J. Scheurer and Bertha E. Fairfield. He married Florence E. Davis.2 He died on 6 June 1970 in San Joaquin County, California, at age 73.3

John E. Scheurer registered for the World War I draft 5 June 1917 at Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. Described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair, he was living unmarried in Stockton where he worked as an electrician for Western States Gas & Electric Co. He had previously served six months in the California State Militia, artillery branch, as a private 1st class. He claimed an exemption from the draft on the grounds that he was serving a public utility company.1
