Dixey Stone was born on 20 November 1713 in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Nehemiah Stone and Lydia Hart.1 His first wife, Jane, died in 1748, and he married second Mary Curtis, daughter of Jacob Curtis and Abigail Bracy, of Arundel, on 15 May 1750.3 He was buried on 27 September 1791.4
Dixey Stone accompanied his brother Jonathan Stone in 1735 to Arundel, York County, Maine, where he was a ship-captain engaged in the coasting trade. On 26 June 1750, the Rev. Mr. Hovey, the local minister, entered in his diary "Dixey Stone and Perkins launched their sloop." This vessel may have been the Speedwell of which Capt. Stone was in command "in His Majesty's Service in the Expedition Eastward" in 1754, the service beginning 3 June and ending 6 August. She was of ninety tons burden and Capt. Stone received £27 : 17 : 2 for her use and £6 : 3 : 9 for his services as master. He was accompanied by Elijah Littlefield as mate, and Joseph Bickford and Jeremy Spring, sailors.5
On 27 September 1791, John Hovey, Esq., Capt. Jacob Wildes and Mr. Thomas Perkins were appointed to administer his estate. An account was presented by his son Robert, however, two years later, stating that the personal estate not being sufficient to pay the debts, it was necessary to sell a portion of the real estate. In 1797, all of the remaining real estate was settled on Robert, the oldest son, on condition that he make certain payments to his brothers and sisters, Jacob, John, Jane wife of James Burnham, Abigail wife of John Smith, Paul (Polly), the heirs of his brother Dixey and the heirs of his sister Sarah Patten.6
Bradbury's says in his History of Kennebunkport, that Dixey Stone first married a Lovet, and that all the children were by his second wife. Both statements, says Davis in The Ancestry of Sarah Stone, are subject to strong doubt. Davis concludes that the "survival of a Bible record is the only chance of a definite determination of the question, in view of the fragmentary character of the Arundel records."7
