     Samuel Butterfield was born in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Nathaniel Butterfield and Deborah Underwood. He married Rachel Spalding, daughter of Deacon Andrew Spalding and Hannah Jeffts, on 7 December 1703 in Chelmsford.1,2 His will was probated on 26 December 1737.1
     
     Samuel Butterfield was a tailor.1 In 1704 Samuel was granted the sum of £4 by the General Court of the Colony for slaying an Indian.1 In 1705 he was captured by the Indians and received shocking treatment which he survived and returned home in 1705.1 Samuel's father divided his real estate in the north part of Chelmsford on 10 January 1709/10 between he and his two brothers, Benjamin and Nathaniel, giving deeds to each.3 He made his will 24 October 1734.1
