     John Hanks was born in 1770.5,6 He was the son of Elijah Hanks and Ann Craft.3,4 On 8 October 1795, John Hanks took out a marriage bond from the clerk of the court in Orange County, North Carolina, as surety that there was no legal obstacle to the proposed marriage between he and Mary Jane Armstrong. Joseph Armstrong (probably Jane's brother) was bondsman; M. Hart, witness.7,1 He married Jennet Armstrong, daughter of John Armstrong and Anne (—?—) (Armstrong), on 15 October 1795.8 He died on 29 June 1839.1,5 He was buried in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina.5
     
     Reverend and Jane Hanks moved to Pittsboro sometime after 1840, perhaps to be nearer their sons Martin, Wesley and John who had settled there about 1839. He was a Campbellite pastor of Christian Church at Hanks' Chapel in Pittsboro.9 He probably died in Pittsboro. The inscription on his gravestone reads:

John Hanks made his will 16 June 1838 in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina. He bequeathed to wife Jane, and children, Wesley, Mary, Martin, John, Nancy and Jane, and appointed Wesley executor.16 Click to view image
