Carolina Magdalena Gramlich was born on 27 March 1838 in Jagsthausen, Württemberg.1,2 She was the daughter of Johann Friederich Gramlich and Friederike Juliana Foit. She married Peter Steinman on 7 March 1861.2 She died on 26 August 1881 in Hardin County, Ohio, at age 43.3,2 She was buried on 28 August 1881 in Smith Cemetery, Washington township, Hardin County.3
In May 1838 two month old Caroline, oldest child, with her parents and several other family members, sailed down the Rhine to Bremen and took passage on the ship Everhard that departed in June, bound for Baltimore. The neighbors in Jagsthausen were sure that a big fish was going to get her, but apparently the trip was uneventful. They arrived in Baltimore on 22 August 1838 after a 63 day journey. Two months later, after her father had earned enough to buy a team of horses to pull the wagon he brought from home, they drove through to Hardin County, Ohio. Caroline lived in Hardin County the rest of her life.4
