Pedigree for Ruth Minerva Fairfield
Friederike Juliana Foit was born on 22 June 1819 in Jagsthausen, Württemberg.2,1,3 She was the daughter of Georg Friederich Foit and Maria Katharina Horlacher.1 She married Johann Friederich Gramlich, son of Johann Christoph Gramlich and Sophia Magdalena Gramlich, on 9 May 1837 in Jagsthausen.1,4 She died of "old age" on 1 May 1899 in Kenton, Hardin County, Ohio, at age 79.5,3 She was buried on 3 May 1899 in Grove Cemetery, Kenton.6,2

Friederike Juliana Foit was 19 years old when she sailed on the ship Everhard out of Bremen with her husband, infant daughter, parents, younger brother and several of her inlaws. They landed in Baltimore on 22 August 1838 and remained there two months while Johann earned enough money to buy a team of horses to pull the wagon he had brought with him. That accomplished, they drove through to Hardin County, Ohio, and settled on 160 acres about eight miles northwest of Kenton in Cessna township.

For at least twenty-five years, the family went by the surname Crumley. As the name is Gramlich on the passenger lists, it is possible the name change was the result of it being misspelled on a document, perhaps the deed to their land, in Hardin County. That is just a guess, but it seems unlikely they would have reclaimed their original surname if the change had been a deliberate choice. In any case, the first notice of the Crumley surname is on the 1840 census, and the last is on the marriage license of their daughter Christeann in December 1865. In November 1867, "Johann F. Gramlich" signed as a witness Francis Cordrey's pension application, but elsewhere in the document, someone else spelled the surname "Grumley."

In America, Friederike Juliana became Fredericka Julia, and she is found referred to by one or the other, but never both. Her husband Johann Friederich became John Frederick. Although most of their twelve children, eleven of whom were born in America, were given German names, all who survived anglicized the spelling. As far as has been determined, none of the name changes were the result of a court action.

John and Fredericka had five sons who died young. The seven children who survived were raised on the Gramlich farm in Cessna township where all but the oldest was born. When John retired from farming, he and Fredericka moved to Kenton where both died.
