- Underwood and Allied Families
Joseph A. Patterson was born circa 1793 in Nova Scotia.2 He was the son of John Patterson.1 He probably died in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, before 1860.
Joseph's service in the Indiana militia is the first record that places the family in Indiana Territory. He may have moved with other members of the family about 1818 to Catahoula Parish, but his name doesn't begin to appear in the conveyance records until 1822. Thereafter, his name appears frequently, mostly as a witness. He was an attorney and may have been away studying law during those several years. Sometime before 1840, he moved to West Feliciana Parish. He may have married because the 1840 census shows two children in his home, a boy and girl. His sister Hannah, probably a widow, was living with him in 1850, but apparently not in 1840 because she had two young daughters at that time. Joseph has not been located on the 1860 census and had probably died though it's possible he moved elsewhere.
