Family Background:
Underwood and Allied Families
Mary Ann Patterson was born circa 1800 in Nova Scotia.2 She was the daughter of John Patterson.1 She married William Griffin on 8 February 1815 in Posey County, Indiana.3 She married Hosea Markham after 20 July 1822, probably in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana.3

Mary Ann moved with her family from Nova Scotia to Indiana Territory between 1807 and 1812. About 1818, she, with her first husband and probably other members of the Patterson family, moved to Catahoula Parish. On 10 October of that year, William Griffin bought a town lot in Harrisonburg which is the earliest record found of the family in Louisiana. She was widowed about 1822 and apparently fell on hard times because lots bought by her late husband were seized and put up for public sale. Her second husband probably died before December 1850 when Mary Ann appears as head of household in the census. Her youngest son, Joseph Markham, was living with her; the oldest, William Griffin, was living with his Uncle Joseph in West Feliciana Parish where he was studying law. Also living in Mary Ann's household in 1850 were five men, a lawyer/doctor, a lawyer, an editor and two printers. She was probably running a boarding house or hotel which is supported by the 1860 census in which she is called a "hotel keep." She is found for the last time on the 1870 census in Harrisonburg, and probably died there before 1880.
