     Benjamin Cobb was born by between 1705 and 1712 in Surry County, Virginia.1 He was the son of Joseph Cobb and Susannah (—?—) (Cobb).1 He died before 18 January 1809 at Cobb's Ford, Hawkins County, Tennessee.2 He was buried at Cobb's Ford.3

Benjamin Cobb witnessed a deed to land on Lightwood Swamp in Isle of Wight County that his father Joseph sold to Ethelred Taylor for five shillings on 11 September 1739.4 On 16 October 1739, Benjamin was given a deed by Carolas (Charles) Anderson of the Precinct of Bertie, North Carolina, for 10 pounds, 150 acres, "part of a Patent granted Thomas Boon for 250 acres, bearing date 1723, southside of Correroy Swamp; land being in the actual possession of the said Benjamin Cobb; including houses, gardens, orchards, woods, and waterways." Witnessed by Joseph Cobb Jr.., Nicholas Boon, Abraham Stevenson. This land later fell within the Northampton County boundary.4 The next day, 17 October 1739, his brother Robert bought land in Bertie County.5

Joseph Cobb of Northampton County for 15 pounds to Benjamin Cobb, 250 acres, being part of a patent granted said Joseph Cobb in 1745, beginning next to Benjamin Cobb's land, 11 January 1752/53. Witnesses: Oliver Woodward, William Carter, John Woodward. Signed Joseph Cobb, Susannah Cobb.6,7

On 25 February 1757 Benjamin Cobb sold all his land in Northampton County to his nephew Stephen Cobb and moved to the "Back Country" of South Carolina where he lived for the next dozen years.8

On 11 July 1758, Stephen Cobb of Northampton County Planter to Thomas Clifton, Jr., of Southampton County, Virginia for 50 lbs. tract of land on south side of Correroy Swamp, 100 acres, also another tract of land on south side of Correroy Swamp bought by Carrolus Anderson, also another tract taken up by Joseph Cobb Sr. and conveyed by Benjamin Cobb to said Stephen, containing together 400 acres. "Have a good right of inheritance."10

In 1758 Benjamin Cobb purchased land on Jeffrey Creek, Craven County, South Carolina, from Gideon Gibson, who was also from Bertie County, North Carolina. He appears in South Carolina records as living in Craven County with several grown sons.10

In 1768 Benjamin Cobb "of Jeffrey Creek and High Hill Creek" disposed of his South Carolina property and joined his son-in-law, Henry Massingill, and sons William and Pharoah Cobb, and went to the Watauga Settlement which was then in North Carolina but is now in Washington County, Tennessee.11,12

On 16 October 1775, he is listed in a bill for service, Jonesboro Court House, Washington County, Tennessee. He served on the Grand Jury at a meeting of the County Court of Washington District, 27 August 1778. 600 acres on Knobb Creek were entered by Benjamin Cobb, 31 July 1778; issued 11 July 1788. This land was near Pharoah Cobb's line.13

640 acres on the east fork of Knobb Creek in Washington County, Tennessee, were entered by Pharoah Cobb, 2 November 1778. This land was near a "conditional line of Benjamin Cobb."14

Benjamin Cobb obtained a grant for 600 acres on Knobb Creek south of the Watauga River, in Washington County, Tennessee, 11 July 1788, for fifty shillings per 100 acres.15 He sold this land to his son Pharoah on 20 December 1789,16 and on 27 February 1792, Pharoah conveyed same to his brother William.17

The last instrument on record pertaining to Benjamin Cobb is an unregistered Power of Attorney executed by Benjamin Cobb, constituting his son, William Cobb, his attorney in fact; dated 28 September 1793, signed in a feeble hand by Benjamin Cobb. It states that he is aged and infirmed and unable to travel, and calls his son, William Cobb, "my trusty and beloved son."18

Benjamin Cobb traditionally lived with his son Pharoah Cobb in Carter County, Tennessee, between 1796 and 1799, and accompanied the latter to his new home at Cobb's Ford, Hawkins County, Tennessee, in 1799.3
