She recalled that her father came to Alma, Arkansas when she was five years old (about 1879). They camped under a tree and put boards and a tent around the tree to protect them until Rev. Simmons could build a log cabin. Mrs. Peevy remembered when the first train came to their community in Arkansas. She also remembered that they put strings across the fireplace, after they moved into their cabin, to hang the diapers on stormy days.1 William wrote in his bible, "and there was born unto us fifteen children five of them was untimely Births all that was Born living was dedicated to God in Baptism in infantcy Except Catharine that Deceased in time of the war or in times of the trouble going out of the war. —W.J.S."10
