Sarah was known all her life as "Doll." Family tradition is that she was not given a proper name until she was several years old, at which time she chose her mother's name for herself. She grew up on her parents' plantation at Bailey's Prairie, and was educated there and at a school for young ladies in Houston. After she and Walter Kennedy married, they made their home at Waverly Plantation near Chenango, now Ramsey State Farm, that Walter had inherited from his father.8 According to their daughter Mary, the family moved in with Doll's father at Ridgely Plantation in 1902, and when he died in 1903, they moved to Angleton. For Doll's health, the family moved in 1911 to the drier climate of San Antonio. She developed tuberculosis and died in a San Antonio sanatorium in 1913.1,8
