John Bates was born on 9 January 1641/42 in Boston, Massachusetts.4 He was the son of Edward Bates and Lydia (—?—) (Bates-Fletcher).2,3 He was baptized on 23 January 1641/42 in First Church, Boston, Massachusetts; "aged about 14 days."5,2 He married Mary Farwell, daughter of Deacon Henry Farwell and Olive Welby, on 22 December 1665 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.6,7,5 He died on 11 April 1722 in Chelmsford "aged about 80 years."8,5
In his will dated 18 July 1716, John Bates calls himself a "cooper" and gives his age as "seventy-four years or thereabouts." He mentions his son John, daughters Mary Cleveland, Elizabeth Richardson, and Sarah Butterfield. He also wills to the children of Lydia Cotton "that shall be alive at my death," from which it appears that she was then deceased. His son-in-law Jonathan Richardson was named sole executor.9
