Jim Taylor graduated from the University of North Carolina, the oldest public university in the nation, in 1859. He served throughout the War Between the States with the Fifth North Carolina regulars. Jim, his wife Virginia, their daughter Effie, and several of Virginia's siblings moved to Texas after the War at the urging of Virginia's uncle, Dr. Anthony T. Morris, and settled in Brazoria County, near West Columbia, on land that from that time forward has been called the "Taylor Place". Jim taught school in Brazoria County for many years. In November 1810, he was elected to the office of county superintendent of public instruction, in which capacity he served four years.4

James P. Taylor appeared on the 1 January 1920 Federal Census of Angleton, Brazoria County, Texas, in the household of Henry Austin and Effie T. Perry, his son-in-law and daughter, with his wife Virginia M.10
On 12 June 1920, James and Virginia Taylor celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at Angleton, Brazoria County, Texas.4
