Jane E. Thurber
Jane Elizabeth Thurber was born on 15 January 1827.1,2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Benjamin Wilson Hall Thurber and Mary Persis King.1 She was baptized on 6 July 1838 in Leeds, Quebec.6 She married James Monroe Fairfield, son of Asa Fairfield and Olive Stone, on 5 May 1847 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.3,2,7 She died on 16 September 1915 in Lochridge, Brazoria County, Texas, at age 88.2,3,4,8,9 Her body was returned to Fort Wayne where she was buried beside her husband at Lindenwood Cemetery.8,10

Her given name was perhaps Elizabeth Jane, but she was called Jane, and her daughters referred to her in letters as Jane Elizabeth. Her granddaughter Ruth remembered her well, for she lived with them in Texas for several years, up until her death in 1915. Ruth was 16 when her grandmother died, and it was a day she would always remember. Jane passed away sometime during the night, and earlier that day, Ruth was in the yard when a large white bird, the likes of which she had never seen before, and never saw again, lit in a nearby tree. In telling the story to her daughter, Ruth Anna, she said the white was so brilliant, it hurt her eyes. She ran in the house to get her stepmother who became agitated and told Ruth not to tell anyone, that it was a sign that there was soon to be a death in the family.11
